Quick answer: Leeds City Council charges one fixed price per pest problem, covering all the visits needed for most pests: £160 for rats or mice, £76 for wasps or ants, £190 for bed bugs or cockroaches (September 2026). Rat treatment is free for Housing Leeds tenants. Book online and allow up to five working days for contact.
Leeds City Council pest control service
Leeds runs a paid pest control service for residents and businesses. Its pricing works differently from most councils: rather than charging per visit, the fee covers all the visits the officer needs to clear the current infestation, except for bed bugs and wasps. Once that problem is cleared, any later issue counts as a new infestation.
Published charges for residents
| Pest | Charge (incl. VAT) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rats | £160 | Free for Housing Leeds tenants (give your housing office and tenancy number) |
| Mice | £160 | Council tenants who book for rats but have mice are charged £160 |
| Wasps | £76 | Officer must be able to see and reach the nest to treat it directly |
| Bed bugs | £190 | Up to three treatments; rooms must be prepared first |
| Cockroaches | £190 | Minimum of three visits, with monitors, gels and sprays |
| Fleas | £115 | – |
| Squirrels | £140 | Trapping in the loft (no poison), daily visits to check traps |
| Ants (black garden ants) | £76 | – |
| Clothes moths | £76 | – |
| Carpet or fur beetles | £76 | – |
| Silverfish | £76 | – |
Leeds does not treat bees, foxes, ladybirds or woodworm, and it treats moles and pigeons only for businesses. If the insects turn out to be bees, a callout charge applies, so check before you book.
How to book
- Request treatment through the council’s online pest infestation form, and allow up to five working days for the council to contact you.
- Not sure what the pest is? Leeds offers a free identification service: email [email protected] with details and photos. For ants, the council suggests catching one on a piece of tape and sending it in before booking.
- Businesses can get a free survey and quote, and the council also offers fixed-price annual contracts.
Who carries out the work
The council says its pest control officers are BASIS PROMPT registered and members of the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA), and that they use pesticides only when justified.
Local pest issues in Leeds
Rats and mice. The council’s advice focuses on keeping garden rats out of the house by repairing external faults: fitting brush strips under external doors, filling holes around pipes with wire wool and cement or expanding foam, and replacing or covering damaged vents with holes larger than 2.5cm with fine mesh, without blocking them entirely. It also asks residents to check for signs of mice before booking a rat visit, because the two are priced and treated differently. See signs of rats and signs of mice.
Wasps. Leeds says a treatment is only likely to work if the officer can find and directly treat the nest; treating a hole that wasps fly in and out of is less effective, and the officer will discuss options or refunds on site. Nests die off around November and are not reused, so if you can avoid the area safely, treatment may not be needed. More in wasp or hornet nest near your home.
Bed bugs. The council does not recommend treating bed bugs yourself and asks you to declutter, hot-wash and bag clothing and bedding before the visit. See what professional bed bug treatment involves.
Private pest control costs in Leeds
We have not found a reliable Leeds-specific price survey. Nationally, Checkatrade reports £120–£240 for a two-visit rat or mouse treatment, £75–£200 for a wasp nest and £120–£260 for cockroaches; the full table is in our UK pest control costs guide. The council’s wasp and ant fee of £76 sits at the bottom of the private range, while its £160 rodent fee is mid-range but includes every visit needed.

Renting in Leeds: who deals with pests?
If you rent from Leeds City Council, contact Housing Leeds: rat treatment is free for its tenants. Other tenants and homeowners pay the standard fee unless the landlord arranges treatment.
In England, Shelter says your landlord must deal with an infestation that is caused by a repair they are responsible for, such as a broken air brick, a gap around a pipe or a rotten window frame, and must keep the home fit to live in throughout the tenancy. If pests were already there when you moved in, the landlord should sort it out. You could be responsible only if you did something to encourage them, for example leaving rubbish out.
Report the problem to your landlord in writing as soon as you notice it. If nothing happens, GOV.UK says you can contact the environmental health team at your council, which can carry out a Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) assessment and must act if it finds serious hazards.

How to choose a pest controller
Unlike many US states, the UK has no public licence register for domestic pest controllers, so ask about training and memberships instead:
- Trade bodies. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) and the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) both have member directories. Ask which one, if any, the firm belongs to, and check the directory yourself.
- Qualifications. Ask what pest management qualification the technician holds (for example the RSPH Level 2 award) and whether they are on the BASIS PROMPT register of trained professionals.
- What the price covers. How many visits, how many rooms, whether bait boxes are collected at the end, and what happens if the pest comes back.
- Proofing. Is blocking entry points included, quoted separately, or not offered?
- Paperwork. Ask for a written report of what was used and where, which helps if you later need to show a landlord or agent.
The council’s own officers are BASIS PROMPT registered and NPTA members, so it is reasonable to ask a private firm for the same.
