Pest control in Glasgow: costs, council services and local pests

Quick answer: Glasgow City Council investigates and treats rats and mice at domestic properties, and a local housing association describes the service as free of charge. Wasp nest removal is the one listed paid service: £116.50 including VAT, June to September only. For most other pests you will need a private firm.

Glasgow City Council pest control service

Glasgow’s council focuses its domestic pest work on rodents. According to its “Report a Pest Control Problem” page (last modified June 2026), the council:

  • investigates and treats mice when they are indoors at a domestic property;
  • investigates and treats rats at a domestic property, indoors or outdoors;
  • works with property managers to fix the problems that let rodents in.

The rodent service does not apply to charity accommodation, houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), holiday lets or any other commercial property.

The University of Glasgow Students’ Representative Council’s housing advice also says the council’s environmental health team deals with cockroaches and bed bugs free of charge as a public health problem. The council’s own pest page does not mention these pests, so ask when you phone.

What the council does not cover

The council says it does not deal with birds, bird feeding or bird-proofing of buildings, or with other animals such as foxes, moles, rabbits, bees and deer. It cannot treat open spaces or private land unless the council owns it.

How to report a problem

Use the online form on the council’s pest control page to report rats or mice. For any other pest control enquiry, including wasps, phone 0141 287 1059. The council publishes its pest control leaflet in nine languages: English, Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Slovakian and Urdu.

Local pest issues in Glasgow

Rodents in tenements and flats. Local housing associations set out how they share the work with the council. Partick Housing Association says tenants with rats or mice should contact the council’s environmental health service, and that the association will fill and block holes in the building, inside and out, once rodent control is done. Our guides to signs of rats and signs of mice help you describe the problem when you report it.

Wasps in summer. The council’s wasp service runs only from June to September, and bees are not treated. If you are not sure what you have, see wasp or hornet nest near your home before paying the non-refundable fee.

Private pest control costs in Glasgow

We have not found a reliable Glasgow-specific price survey. Checkatrade’s UK figures put a two-visit rat or mouse job at £120–£240, a wasp nest at £75–£200 and an insecticide bed bug treatment at £100–£280; see our UK pest control costs guide. Shelter Scotland notes that a private firm will usually cost more than the council, so check what the council will do first.

Renting in Glasgow: Scottish rules

Scotland has its own renting law, so the English rules you may read elsewhere do not apply. Private landlords must keep the home up to the repairing standard throughout the tenancy. Shelter Scotland says that if you rent, your landlord must do repairs to keep your home pest free and must deal with pests caused by repair problems, such as damp, loose tiles or roofing, or holes in skirting, walls or floorboards. Your part is to keep the home clean and to report repairs as soon as you notice them.

If your landlord does not act, mygov.scot says you can apply to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber). The tribunal can issue a Repairing Standard Enforcement Order setting out what work must be done and by when, and there is no cost to apply.

If a neighbour is causing the problem, Shelter Scotland says the council’s environmental health team can order them to deal with the pests or do repairs, and can do the work itself and charge them if they do not comply. If you cannot afford pest control, Shelter Scotland suggests a Scottish Welfare Fund crisis grant or a charitable grant search on Turn2Us.

How to choose a pest controller

Unlike many US states, the UK has no public licence register for domestic pest controllers, so ask about training and memberships instead:

  • Trade bodies. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) and the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) both have member directories. Ask which one, if any, the firm belongs to, and check the directory yourself.
  • Qualifications. Ask what pest management qualification the technician holds (for example the RSPH Level 2 award) and whether they are on the BASIS PROMPT register of trained professionals.
  • What the price covers. How many visits, how many rooms, whether bait boxes are collected at the end, and what happens if the pest comes back.
  • Proofing. Is blocking entry points included, quoted separately, or not offered?
  • Paperwork. Ask for a written report of what was used and where, which helps if you later need to show a landlord or agent.

Our longer guide covers inspections, qualifications and treatment plans.
