Australian councils do not generally sell domestic pest control, so there is no council fee table to compare. The ranges below come from two national marketplaces that publish cost guides: hipages and Airtasker. They are reported typical ranges in Australian dollars, not quotes, and both were checked in September 2026.

Free and public services worth knowing
- Fire ants (south-east Queensland): suspected fire ants are reported to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program on 13 25 23 or online, not treated privately. See Brisbane.
- European wasps (Western Australia): suspected European wasps are reported to DPIRD’s Pest and Disease Information Service so the department can find and destroy the nest. See Perth.
- European wasps (some Adelaide councils): the City of Mitcham and Port Adelaide Enfield advertise free help with European wasp nests for residents; the City of Adelaide does not destroy nests on private property. See Adelaide.
- Rats (Brisbane): Brisbane City Council will send an officer to investigate a rat or mouse infestation and advise the owner, but does not treat private homes.
Why quotes differ
- Property size and perimeter: general treatments are priced on the number of rooms and the length of the outside walls.
- Access: roof voids, subfloors, high eaves and nests in wall cavities take longer.
- Termites: an inspection, a spot treatment and a full chemical or physical barrier are very different jobs. Our guide to what a termite inspection covers explains the difference.
- Warranty: a longer warranty or a follow-up visit is often built into the price.
- Protected wildlife: possums are protected, so removal must follow state rules and often means exclusion rather than relocation.
Licensing affects who you can hire
Each state licenses pest management technicians: the NSW Environment Protection Authority, Victoria’s Department of Health, Queensland Health, the WA Department of Health and SA Health. New homes in termite-risk areas also need a termite management system and a durable notice under the National Construction Code, which is covered in our guide to termite protection in new Australian homes.

FAQs
How much is a general pest spray in Australia?
hipages reports about $130 for a three-bedroom house and $170 for a four-bedroom house for a one-off internal and external spray, and $250–$300 for a more thorough indoor and outdoor treatment.
How much does termite treatment cost?
hipages reports $180–$250 for an isolated area and up to $3,000 for a full barrier; Airtasker reports $595–$4,063. Get an inspection report before comparing treatment quotes.
Does my council do pest control?
Generally not on private property. Councils deal with public land and investigate health nuisances; a few Adelaide councils help residents with European wasp nests.
Why are bed bug quotes so different?
Bed bugs often need more than one visit and sometimes heat treatment. Reported ranges run from $120–$700 (hipages) to $500–$1,350 (Airtasker).
Can I just get the cheapest quote?
Check the licence first, then compare what is included: visits, warranty and exclusions matter more than the headline price.
